After a spontaneous mid-August decision, we set off from Lake Iseo towards Elba Island in our camper. Departing from Piombino, ferries to Elba run hourly, requiring no prior arrangements. Motorists can buy tickets on-site. To secure a camper spot, we booked a ferry online the night before, factoring in the 5-hour journey. Arriving in Portoferraio, we immediately found a spot for a quick dive
Day 1:
Decent underwater activity with bream and mullets, followed by a delightful dinner at a Portoferraio waterfront restaurant. We spent the night peacefully facing the sea in Magazzini's (free of charge) parking lot.
Day 2:
Opting for a dive at Scoglietto, we joined a group organized by Sommozzatori Bresciani at Camping Rosselba le Palme. Babette guided us through a memorable shipwreck dive, encountering groupers, sea bass, moray eels, scorpionfish, and nudibranchs. Post-dive, we visited Pomonte to explore the Eliott shipwreck and spent the night with a stunning sunset view.
Day 3:
On Ferragosto, we rose early for spearfishing at Capo Sant'Andrea. Natural pools carved into granite cliffs and clear waters offered a unique experience. The strong current limited dives beyond 20 meters. In the evening, we headed to Lacona and stayed at the Parco delle Dune parking area for two days.
Day 4:
Renting a motorboat from Porto Azzurro, we explored Ortano Rock and Punta della Cannelle. Despite challenges from the strong current and boat traffic, we enjoyed the underwater scenery. In the afternoon, we visited an airplane wreck near Punta Nera, perfect for photos and freediving practice. Dinner in the camper concluded the day.
Day 5:
Renting another motorboat from Margidore Yacht Club, we fished at I Corbelli, I Gemini, Scoglio Remaiolo, and Isola Corbella. Each spot offered breathtaking views. After fishing, we discovered deserted beaches and enjoyed a swim. Dinner in Capoliveri preceded a night in Magazzini to prepare for the ferry departure.
Day 6:
Ferry from Portoferraio to Piombino marked our return. Before leaving, we met Filippo Carletti, an Aida instructor, and explored Piombino's historic center. The day ended with lunch at a local trattoria, concluding our Elba Island adventure. Stay tuned for the next one!
